Opinion: Public discussion of constitutional amendments is extremely open

Public discussion of the constitutional amendments is extremely open, Sergei Musiyenko, director of the EcooM think tank, told at a meeting as part of BelTA's Expert Community project to discuss the public discussion of the constitutional amendments.

"When the first version of the Constitution was adopted, there was nothing like that. There was no such thorough conversation. The openness is unprecedented. Anyone can pitch in. We have already had our revolutions. Belarus has exhausted its limit on revolutions. Therefore, a clear calm conversation is really welcome. It has been on for a long time. This is important, because we, Belarusians, have the opportunity to influence the main law of the country," Sergei Musiyenko said.

According to him, the awareness of the population of the upcoming referendum is very high. “We saw it during the latest large-scale sociological study ‘Belarus. The Vision of the Future'. That says a lot. This is a long-range goal, something that we will pass on to our children, future generations. The things that we have achieved over the years of independence, the changes the political system and society itself have gone through. Everything will be reflected. People accept it. The main message is to preserve social guarantees. We are accustomed to the fact that the state protects us and takes care of us. We want this to remain in place. This is a protective function of statehood. At the same time, we must share some responsibility too.”
