Economist on ruble zone in Belarus-Russia Union State: Completely safe for Belarus
Senior Lecturer of the Economic Theory and Marketing Chair of the Belarusian State Technological University, Bachelor of Economics Yulia Abukhovich talked on BelTA's YouTube channel about prospects of creating a ruble zone in the Union State of Belarus and Russia.
Yulia Abukhovich said: “It was not the main item on the agenda but it may be revisited now. The ruble zone already existed within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. Payment options will be expanded now. Our choice is the currency our Belarusian ruble is tied to.”
According to Yulia Abukhovich, the possible transition to the ruble zone within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will be completely safe for Belarus. “We will not suffer due to it,” she said.
The ruble zone is a currency union, which existed in 1991-1994 and united former USSR republics. As the common currency they used the USSR ruble first and then the Russian ruble.
